What is Earthen Building?
Earthen Buildings are buildings that use raw earth (unfired, untreated) as main building material. Building an earthen house is a process that reconnects us to the mother earth as we have to observe, feel, touch and learn about the dirt and the natural materials. The building processes help us to realize, understand and respect the dirt, its qualities and characteristic. In this Earthen Building Workshop, apart from learning building techniques you will also build a new perception towards dirt and nature.
Why Earthen Building?
Earthen buildings have the least impact on the environment in the process of building or dismantling. Earthen houses are suitable for tropical climate because it keeps the house cool during the day when the weather’s hot and keeps the house warm when it’s cold outside during the night. Earthen buildings use natural and local materials and allows you to be creative. Building an earthen house is a process to deepen your connection with the earth. This course will also empower you to build your own house.
What This Earthen Building Workshop Covers?
This Earthen Building Workshop will cover theory and practices on the following:
- Ecological house design
- Making adobe bricks and building with adobe
- Building with earthbags
- Natural plaster and paint
- Building arch walls
- Installing doors & windows
- Built-in furniture
What Project Will We Work On In This Course
We will be working on a house on Gaia Ecovillage Residential zone.
Food & Accommodation
Included in the fee is accommodation in our dormitory, 3 vegetarian/vegan meals per day, two tea breaks a day as well as yoga and meditation.
If you want to stay after the course please let’s us know in advance. You can continue to stay as Guest or Volunteer or Intern.
We also have private accommodation available that can be booked for an additional fee.
Accommodation:
- Dormitory : hostel style. Mosquito nets, cushions, bedding, and blankets are provided.
- Private double room for an extra fee of 3,500 THB for course duration(10 nights) please check availability before booking. Ideal for couples and/or small family).
- Private single room for extra fee of 2500 THB. for course duration (10 nights) please check availability before booking.
- Private Family house for 4-5 guests for extra fee of 9,000 THB for course duration (10 nights) Please check availability before booking.
Food:
During the course we serve three vegetarian meals and tea prepared by our resident team. We also provide two herbal tea breaks with fruit or some healthy snack. All our meals are vegetarian. If you have any dietary restrictions or needs please contact the staff.
Classroom:
Indoor sessions will be held in our naturally built sala or our mini sala out of bamboo. Practical sessions will be happening on the land.
Toilets & Showers:
Showers : Common showers are available. There closed shower rooms and simple outdoor showers.
Toilets : Common toilets are available. 4 dry compost toilets and 2 vermi-compost toilets.
Other Facilities
- GAIA CAFE on our land. Here you can get your daily dose of coffee and tea, and have a look at our GAIA ESSENCE natural products.
- The ponds to swim and enjoy boating
- Internet: We provide Wi-Fi in our cafe and you usually get good reception with AIS.
