Clean Water is Flowing at Gaia Ashram

A new Biochar Slow Sand Water Filtration System is now operating at Gaia Ashram, helping us build greater water resilience and self-reliance in the dry climate of Northeast Thailand.

A Permaculture Approach to Water, Self-Reliance and Clean Energy

One of the most important resources at Gaia Ashram is something we often take for granted: clean water.

Here in the Udon Thani region of Northeast Thailand, water is a precious resource. Every year, we experience a long dry season, and during the hottest months, water becomes increasingly scarce. As temperatures rise and rainfall disappears for extended periods, managing and conserving the water available to us becomes essential.

Water is at the heart of life at Gaia. It is needed for cooking, cleaning, growing food, maintaining our gardens, washing, bathing and supporting the many people who visit, learn and live here.

Finding ways to capture, store, filter and use water wisely is therefore an important part of our journey toward greater resilience and self-reliance.

We are very happy to share that a major step in this journey is now complete.

Our new Biochar Slow Sand Water Filtration System is up and running!

The system brings together natural filtration, traditional Thai water jars, locally appropriate materials, rainwater harvesting, biochar production and hands-on learning. It is also a wonderful example of how we can apply permaculture principles to solve practical problems while creating opportunities for education and community participation.

Building Resilience in a Water-Scarce Climate

Living in Northeast Thailand means learning to work with the rhythms of the climate.

The rainy season can bring abundant water, while the dry season can stretch on for months. During the hot season, when water is needed most, natural supplies become increasingly limited.

Gaia Ashram has a pond that serves as an important water source for the site. Currently, water is pumped from the pond into our storage tanks, allowing us to maintain a supply for daily use around the Ashram.

But pumping water requires energy.

This is where our water project connects with another important development taking place at Gaia.

We are currently working on a new solar energy project, which will allow us to harness the abundant sunlight available here and gradually reduce our dependence on conventional energy sources.

Once this project is operational, our vision is simple and powerful:

Water from the pond → filtered into clean water → pumped using clean solar energy

In other words, the sun that makes the dry season so hot can also become part of the solution.

This is the kind of connection between systems that we love about permaculture.


From an Idea to a Working Water System

The Biochar Slow Sand Water Filtration System was inspired by natural filtration approaches developed by Pun Pun and AQ Solutions. We wanted to explore how these ideas could be adapted to Gaia Ashram and our particular needs, using materials and technologies that are appropriate to our context.

Rather than relying on a conventional, highly engineered filtration installation, we chose to work with simple, understandable systems that can be built, maintained and improved locally.

A key part of the project was the use of traditional Thai concrete water jars, known as Oong.

These large jars are commonly found throughout Thailand and have traditionally been used for storing water. For our project, we were able to make use of old and discarded jars, giving them a new purpose rather than sending them to waste.

The jars were strengthened and waterproofed before being connected through a network of plumbing. We then prepared the different filtration layers using gravel, sand and charcoal.

The result is a filtration system that combines traditional materials and knowledge with appropriate technology and ecological design.


Turning Waste into a Resource

One of the most interesting parts of the project has been the use of biochar.

Charcoal is an important component of the filtration system, and instead of purchasing large quantities of commercial charcoal, we produced our own using Gaia Ashram’s TLUD charcoal system.

This allowed us to connect two different parts of our work: our approach to biomass and biochar production, and our approach to water management.

Materials that might otherwise be considered waste can become useful resources when we look at them differently.

This is one of the fundamental ideas behind permaculture: rather than seeing separate problems, we look for relationships between systems and opportunities to create multiple benefits.

The charcoal produced through the TLUD system becomes part of the water filtration process, while our wider biochar work continues to explore ways of cycling organic resources within the site.


Learning by Doing

The construction of the water filtration system was not simply a building project.

Our Permaculture Design Course participants were involved throughout the process, helping turn the development of the system into a real-world learning experience.

This is exactly the kind of education we want to encourage at Gaia Ashram.

Permaculture is not something that needs to remain on paper or in a classroom. It becomes meaningful when we can observe a problem, understand the natural and human systems involved, design a response, build it with our own hands and then observe how it performs over time.

Participants were able to see how principles of appropriate technology, resource conservation, water management, reuse and multifunctional design can come together in a single project.

The water system therefore became more than infrastructure.

It became a living example of permaculture in practice.

Stacking Functions: More Than Just a Water Filter

One of the principles we applied to the project was stacking functions.

In permaculture, this means designing elements so that they perform more than one useful function.

The structure supporting the water system is a good example.

Rather than creating a structure that only holds the filtration jars, we designed the space underneath and around it to serve additional purposes. It now incorporates an office, storage space and laundry area.

This helps us make better use of limited space and resources while creating infrastructure that supports several different activities at Gaia.


Making Better Use of Rainwater

The project is also connected to Gaia’s ongoing efforts to harvest and use rainwater.

Rainwater collected from the roof is directed into a 2,000-litre storage tank. From there, it can be directed through the filtration system when appropriate.

Rainwater is especially valuable in a region where the seasons can bring such dramatic differences in water availability.

Capturing it allows us to slow down its journey through the site and make use of water that would otherwise simply run off.

By integrating rainwater harvesting with our wider water system, we can begin to think of water not as something that simply arrives, gets used and leaves the site, but as a resource that can be captured, stored, filtered and used as thoughtfully as possible.

How the Biochar Slow Sand Filtration System Works

At the heart of the system is a simple sequence of natural filtration processes.

Gaia Ashram now has 12 large concrete Oong jars, each with a capacity of approximately 1,000–1,200 litres.

Three jars currently form our active filtration sequence.

The basic flow is:

Pond water → Gravel → Sand → Charcoal → Clean water storage

Water first enters the filtration system and passes through layers of gravel, sand and charcoal.

Each material plays a different role within the filtration process. Together, the layers provide a series of physical and biological filtration stages before the water reaches the clean-water storage system.

Once filtered, the water is automatically pumped into our 4,000-litre raised clean-water storage system.

From there, it can be distributed around Gaia Ashram for domestic purposes, including our:

  • Kitchens
  • Showers
  • Toilets
  • Housing
  • Café
  • General domestic use

 

The system gives us another tool for making better use of the water resources available to us, particularly as we navigate the challenges of the long dry season.

The Water is Flowing. The Learning Continues

This project is more than a water filtration system.

It is a practical response to the realities of living in a water-scarce climate. It is an experiment in appropriate technology. It is an example of resource reuse and multifunctional design. It is a hands-on classroom for our Permaculture Design Course participants.

And it is part of something bigger.

As we develop our solar energy project, we are working toward a future where the water flowing through Gaia can increasingly be moved and managed using energy from the sun.

Water and energy resilience.
Resourcefulness and self-reliance.
Learning by doing.

This is what putting permaculture into practice looks like.

The water is flowing.
The sun is shining.
And the learning continues.
